As the weather forecast paints a picture of an impending winter storm, it’s time to shift gears from autumn leaves to winter worries. At Jerry’s Collision Center, we’re hoping everyone stays safe, but we’re also realistic – winter storms can turn even the shortest drive into a hazard.

We’re here for you if things go wrong, but our biggest wish is that they don’t. So, before the first snowflake falls or the ice creeps in, here’s your essential guide to preparing your vehicle and yourself for the challenges ahead.

Proactive Protection: Getting Your Car Winter-Ready

The best defense is a good offense! A little preparation can go a long way in preventing an accident or minimizing damage.

  1. Tire Check is a Must: Are your tires in good condition? Do they have enough tread depth? Consider winter tires if you live in an area prone to heavy snow and ice – they make a world of difference in grip and stopping power. Ensure they’re properly inflated, as cold weather can drop tire pressure.

  2. Fluids, Fluids, Fluids:

    • Antifreeze: Check your coolant levels and ensure your antifreeze is rated for extreme cold.

    • Windshield Washer Fluid: Top it off with a winter-specific fluid that won’t freeze. You’ll be using a lot of it to clear salt and slush!

  3. Wiper Blades: When was the last time you replaced them? Old, cracked blades won’t clear your windshield effectively, reducing visibility when you need it most.

  4. Battery Health: Cold weather is tough on batteries. If yours is more than three years old, get it tested. You don’t want to be stranded with a dead battery in freezing temperatures.

  5. Emergency Kit in Your Trunk: This is non-negotiable!

    • Jumper cables

    • Flashlight with extra batteries

    • First-aid kit

    • Warm blanket, gloves, hat

    • Bag of sand or cat litter (for traction if stuck)

    • Small shovel

    • Non-perishable snacks and water

    • Phone charger/power bank

Driving Safely in a Winter Storm

Even with a perfectly prepped car, winter driving demands extra caution.

  • Slow Down: This is the golden rule. Speed limits are for ideal conditions, not icy roads.

  • Increase Following Distance: You’ll need significantly more room to stop on slippery surfaces.

  • Gentle Inputs: Accelerate, brake, and steer smoothly. Sudden movements can cause skids.

  • Clear Your Vehicle Completely: Before driving, clear ALL snow and ice from your windshield, windows, mirrors, headlights, taillights, and even the roof. Snow flying off your car is a hazard to others.

  • Be Aware of Black Ice: This invisible killer often forms on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas. Drive cautiously, especially in these spots.

When the Unthinkable Happens: What to Do After a Collision

Despite all precautions, accidents can still occur. If you find yourself in a collision during or after a winter storm, here’s what to do:

  1. Stay Calm and Safe: Move your vehicle to a safe location if possible (shoulder of the road). Turn on your hazard lights.

  2. Check for Injuries: Assess yourself and any passengers. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately.

  3. Call the Police: Even for minor collisions, it’s often wise to have a police report, especially for insurance purposes.

  4. Exchange Information: Get the other driver’s name, contact information, insurance details, and license plate number. Do not admit fault.

  5. Document Everything:

    • Take photos of the accident scene, damage to both vehicles, and any road conditions (snow, ice).

    • Note the time, date, and location.

    • Get contact information for any witnesses.

  6. Contact Jerry’s Collision Center: Once everyone is safe and you’ve documented the scene, give us a call. Our team is ready to assist you with towing, estimates, and navigating the repair process with your insurance company.
